You may have already heard some important news about the 19th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology. After consultation between the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) and the British Pharmacological Society, we have decided to move the congress from 2022 to 2-7 July 2023. We are determined that there should be as few barriers as possible to delegates attending and joining us in Glasgow. At the heart of our decision is the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved, as well as accessibility. Several countries around the world have begun to implement vaccination programmes to tackle the spread of COVID-19, and ultimately to bring the pandemic to an end.
However, because of the variation in vaccination schemes across different countries and the possibility that without vaccination travel may not be possible, we are concerned that holding the congress in 2022 may mean that some delegates cannot attend. In addition, across the globe there are also varying travel and quarantine restrictions between countries, and there is some considerable uncertainty regarding the availability of airline carriers and other international transport.
In addition, the move creates more time for those who have been hampered by increased or changing workloads due to the pandemic, to participate and contribute fully.
We hope you will agree that moving WCP to 2023 is a positive step and one which will ensure we can meet safely face-to-face when global vaccination is on a surer footing, for a vibrant and celebratory congress.
Please update your diaries with the new dates, and we will be in touch soon with further news and updates.
